Dalston - with Tyler Williams Green, the CEO and founder of The Outrunners
Tyler Williams Green is a brand consultant and the CEO and founder of The Outrunners, which evolved from being a Hackney-based community running group to a registered charity working across East London. The Outrunners runs three adult and five youth running sessions each week, alongside social mentoring, a career programme for young people and a training programme for youth leaders.
Where do you rest your head?
To sleep, Dalston, but to chill out, hot pod yoga - which is pretty ironic.
What’s something unique about your area that only the locals know about?
Dalston has some of the best Caribbean restaurants in London.
Where’s your favourite free place to visit in the city?
I'm a born and bred Londoner and still can’t pick one favourite. To be honest, I love the whole of this fantastic city. I love running through London at night when it’s quiet and walking along the canal on a summer’s day. I love walking through the chaos of Ridley Road Market and sitting in silence on kite hill on Hampstead Heath.
Where’s your favourite local spot for a cheap bite to eat?
It’s 100% Casablanca on Sandringham Road, by Hackney Downs station. It’s my local west Indian restaurant and has saved me from so many hangovers
What would your perfect no-spend London day involve?
It would definitely be going for a run around the city.
How would you describe The Outrunners - and what are you hoping to achieve with it?
It’s more than a running club – it’s about promoting diversity in running and movement for all. Many well-being and fitness communities are popping up across London, but not all of them are accessible to all or a true reflection of the tapestry of this beautiful city.
What can Cheapskate readers do to support amazing initiatives like The Outrunners and young Londoners more generally?
Be an active citizen. Participate in things that enable you to connect more to the broader community. Also, look for local causes and see how you can support them. That could be donating money, your time or sharing the cause with your network.
Are there any other organisations supporting young people in London which you’d like to give a shout out to?
Badu Sports and Football Beyond Borders.
If you were mayor for the day, what would you do?
I would make fitness and wellness accessible to all. I would make expensive gyms and wellbeing spaces offer discounted rates to people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
In three words, what makes someone a Londoner?
Diversity, grit, proud.
